Program Overview
Saint Lucia Campus The combined Pre-Med and MD Program provides candidates with a solid foundation in Basic Sciences before they begin their Curriculum for Doctor Of Medicine. We evaluate every applicant’s prior educational background to determine their eligibility and appropriate placement into the program. Students signing up for the combined program will be required to complete four terms of undergraduate coursework (IAU College of Arts & Sciences Pre-Med Program) before beginning their MD Curriculum.
Medical School Year 2 & 3: Basic Sciences Saint Lucia Campus
Many medical schools expose their students solely to classroom-based didactics during the duration of their basic sciences curriculum. They get the opportunity to apply their theory to practical knowledge almost after 2 years. But, at International American University, College Of Medicine, we take a more progressive approach towards medical education by immediately exposing our students to a case-based, problem-oriented curriculum (problem-based learning, or PBL). This enables our students to practise active learning (researching, discussing) over passive learning (sitting, memorising). Our curriculum helps students gain confidence in their own presentation skills which they must acquire to prepare themselves for presenting their ideas to a room full of medical doctors.
Medical School Year 4 & 5: Clinical Sciences USA, Canada or Saint Lucia
IAU students are required to pass the USMLE Step 1 exam before the end of the bridge semester. Students can begin clinical rotation in the U.S upon completion of the course. The 3rd and the 4th years of medical school consist of Clinical Sciences and Clinical Rotations (clerkships) under the supervision of a physician (preceptor). Our Clinical campus is located in Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona and all affiliated hospitals have ACGME accredited residency programs. Students are required to complete a total of 48 weeks of core clerkships and an additional 28 weeks of elective clerkships to complete the program. Elective rotation details are made available to the students at the time of scheduling. In addition to completing clerkships during these final two years of the MD Program, students must also prepare for the USMLE Step 2 Clinical knowledge and Step 2 Clinical Skills. It is mandatory to clear both these exams before the MD degree is conferred.
